The country flourished with Mayan civilization before the Spanish took the control of ruling. However, Guatemala became independent from Spain on 15th September, 1821. Though Guatemala became independent in 1821, the National Anthem of Guatemala was adopted in 1896.
"Guatemala Feliz!" is the initial phrase of the National Anthem of Guatemala. José Joaquín Palma is the lyricist of National Anthem of Guatemala. However, the words of the anthem were later modified by Jose Maria Bonilla Ruano. The tune for the National Anthem of Guatemala was given by Rafael Álvarez Ovalle for the original version itself. National Anthem of Guatemala in Traditional Spanish:
¡Guatemala feliz...! que tus aras
no profane jamás el verdugo;
ni haya esclavos que laman el yugo
ni tiranos que escupan tu faz.
Si mañana tu suelo sagrado
lo amenaza invasión extranjera,
libre al viento tu hermosa bandera
a vencer o a morir llamará.

Libre al viento tu hermosa bandera
a vencer o a morir llamará;

Pues tus hijos valientes y altivos,

paladión que protege tu suelo;

Guatemala, tu nombre inmortal!
National Anthem of Guatemala in English:
Glad (joyful) Guatemala! May your altar
Never be trampled by the hangman
Slaves cannot lick the yoke
Tyrants cannot spit on your face
If tomorrow your sacred soil
By foreign invasion is threatened
Free in the wind, your beautiful flag
For victory or death, he summoned

Free in the wind, your beautiful flag
For victory or death, he summoned
Thy people shall be with the soul of fire
die before being enslaved.

From your old and hard chains
You wrought with anger driven hand
The plough that fertilizes the soil
And the sword of honour economy.
Our fathers fought one day
Lit patriotic combustion
And they succeeded, without bloody clash,
To put you on a throne of love.

And they realized, without bloody clash,
To put you on a throne of love,
And our nation, in agreement energetic sign,
Gave life to redeeming ideal.

Your logo is a piece of heaven
Which a cloud gets its whiteness
And woe to anyone who dares in blind madness
your spot colours!
For your children, brave and zealous
who love peace as a great treasure
will never avoid the rough battle
to defend their land and their homes.

They will never avoid the rough battle
to defend their land and their homes
and the altar of the country,
their altar.

Lying on the proud Ande,
two oceans, hear its sound,
in gold and crimson wing of the beautiful quetzal
turn you into a trance.
Native bird that lives in your seal
protect your soil
It fly high
more than the Andean condor and the royal eagle!

It fly high
more than the cathartid and the royal eagle
And its wings, it can raise to the sky

Guatemala, name, immortal!
